Fraser Island

Fraser Island is the largest Sand Island on Earth with a most unique ecosystem with majestic rainforest growing in almost pure silica sands. a hundred freshwater lakes and a number of fast flowing creeks with clear pure water filtered by the Islands fine sand. The largest, Eli Creek can pour up to 4 million litres into the sea every hour.

The Island was World Heritage Listed in 1992 and is one of the Top 10 must see Destinations for visitors to Australia. The Island is managed by the Environmental Protection Agency of the Queensland Government and Permits are required to access it with a 4WD vehicle and camp in the National Park Areas of the Island.

Sand mining on Fraser Island ceased in 1976 and logging ceased on the Island in the early 1991. Fraser Island was inhabited for over 5,500 years by Aboriginal people known as Butchella who gave the Island the name of K’gari, meaning paradise…

 All roads crossing the Island are sand tracks and require high clearance 4WD with low range. The Eastern Beach is the best way of travelling North and South, with good access 2 hours either side of low tide.

Tours are available from 1 to 3 days, the longer your tour the more you see and the longer you get to enjoy the various lakes and attractions as travel is island time. The island has two resorts: Kingfisher Bay resort and Eurong beach resort. The Kingfisher Bay Resort is an eco-friendly resort giving you a peaceful, relaxing stay. You may like to take a canoe paddle or have a fish of the jetty. Eurong beach resort can only be accessed with a 4WD. It is located on 75 mile beach.
