Barge Access & Permits

General Information

Getting to Fraser Island - Barge Access PermitsFraser Island is accessible to 4WD Vehicles only. All roads on the Island are SAND TRACKS, Low range is required to traverse the island. The Eastern or Ocean Beach is traversable 2 hours either side of the high tide. Normal Australian road rules apply to all tracks and beaches on Fraser Island. Speed limits on the Beach are 80 kph (maximum 50 kph recommended) & 40 kph in shared zones and beach camping areas. Inland tracks 35 kph max with the inland track from Dilli Village to Hook Point 50 kph. Note: Always drive to suit changing conditions of tracks and beaches on the Island, slower is safer. If you have decreased your tyre pressure, avoid high speeds or swerving as this can be very dangerous. The tyre wall strength is severely weakened and can allow the rim to dig into the sand causing roll overs. A National Parks Vehicle Access Permit is required to drive on the Island, and camping permits to camp in the National Park area. See details below.

Caution:

ALL WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR DRIVING ON FRASER ISLAND.

Vehicles must have 2 gear ratios, i.e : high range and low range. If hiring a vehicle from any of the major car hire companies i.e. Europ Car, Avis etc, please check with the hirer as most do not allow their vehicles on Fraser Island and you will not be covered for insurance. Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach have a number of specialist 4WD Hire companies specifically for hires to Fraser Island.
